Teaching Seminars

Weekly Teaching Seminars, 2008-2010

In my opinion, one of Columbia’s finest resources is the Graduate School’s Teaching Center, which gives encouragement and aid of all kinds to students aspiring to careers in academia.  Weekly lunchtime seminars with titles such as “How to give an effective academic talk,” “e-Learning: how to integrate new technologies into your teaching,” and “Preparing for the academic job market” have been very helpful in directing my graduate school choices.  The center’s directors, Steven Mintz and Jan Allen, are experienced teachers and compelling speakers, and both their advice and their example reinforce my conviction that good teaching can significantly increase the impact of a class on a student’s life.
